The President of Netball Jamaica says she is concerned over whether the national team's tour of England will take place next month, because of the new variant of coronavirus present in the country.

The Jamaican Government has banned flights to and from the United Kingdom for 14 days because of the new strain, a ban that is due to expire on January 4, two days before the Sunshine Girls are due to fly to the country.

Tricia Robinson said that although she was confident about the safety measures which are in place, she still had concerns over the team travelling to the country.

"They are supposed to be playing in a bubble, but my only discomfort is the travelling between the two airports and what happens with them leaving Jamaica and them arriving in England," said Robinson, as reported by Jamaican newspaper The Sunday Gleaner.

"The protocols will be really solid because England went to New Zealand for a series and based on the experience there, they have added additional safety protocols for this series.

"The players will be on their own floor, the management and people surrounding the series will be on another floor and so are aware of those protocols and we are satisfied with the protocols," she added.

"I am confident of all preparations going into the tour and so I know that the girls will do well in the series."

The series is scheduled to consist of four matches - which are all due to be played at London's Copper Box Arena, the venue for handball and modern pentathlon at the London 2012 Olympics.

It is an eagerly anticipated series between the teams ranked third and fourth in the latest International Netball Federation world rankings.

England currently sit in third with 6,299 points with Jamaica in fourth with 3,496 points.

The sides last meeting was at the Copper Box in January as part of the Vitality Netball Nations Cup, a match that Jamaica edged 70-66.

This four-game contest is due to be branded as the Vitality Netball Legends Series, and the teams are set to battle it out for the Jean Hornsby Cup, named in honour of the first black player to represent England.
