Organisers of the 2021 Summer Deaflympics in Brazil have said they "remain committed to planning and preparing everything necessary" despite continued disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Competition is scheduled to take place from December 5 to 21 2021 in the Brazilian city of Caxias do Sul.

Emir José Alves da Silva and Evaldo Antônio Kuiava, the President and vice-president of the Organising Committee, wrote a letter to participating countries to assure them of their commitment.

"We remain committed to planning and preparing everything necessary to host the 24th Summer Deaflympics as another milestone for the International Committee on Sports for the Deaf (ICSD)," the letter said.

Alves da Silva and Kuiava also addressed the impact of the pandemic, which has brought sport to a standstill around the world.

A number of scenarios are being planned to ensure the Summer Deaflympics can still be held.

"This is a problem that has made everyone very concerned and uncertain about the feasibility of the Summer Deaflympics in 2021," the letter said.

"It is an atypical moment for everyone, but we have to deal with this new reality.

"We are proposing different scenarios for the organisation of the Deaflympics.

"We believe that we will have prepared three scenarios for the preparation and the course of the event itself, taking into account a similar format for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

"We will soon complete these proposals and they will be submitted and subsequently approved by the ICSD that they can be positively evaluated, so everyone will be informed about these scenarios, because it is a global problem and we do not want to neglect anything in terms of security of the event itself."

The last edition of the Summer Deaflympics was held in Turkish city Samsun during 2017.

Around 5,000 athletes and delegates took part, with 21 sports on the programme.
