World Table Tennis (WTT) has announced the appointment of Melissa Soobratty as senior media director for the new body, which will run the International Table Tennis Federation's (ITTF) commercial and event business from 2021.

Soobratty will be tasked with leading the overall media strategy of WTT in her new role.

"WTT has ambitious plans to propel table tennis to the next level in sport and beyond, not least in the way that it aims to cultivate and grow its global audience through cutting-edge content across all of WTT's media channels," said Soobratty.

"I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and working together with the team and the WTT partners."

Soobratty joins from Football Marketing Asia, where she served as vice president of media for the company - the exclusive commercial partner of the Asian Football Confederation.

She contributed to the commercialisation and marketing of premier football competitions across the Asian continent as well as the digital and social media strategy.

Soobratty previously worked as a business development director at Endeavor Streaming, formerly known as NeuLion.

The role saw Soobratty map out the strategy for the pan-Asia Pacific introduction of the organisation's over-the-top platform, providing digital video broadcasting, distribution and monetisation of live and on-demand content.

She also negotiated several significant TV rights deals for StarHub.

WTT believe Soobratty's experience will help to further professionalise the organisation's expanding media operations.

"We are delighted to be welcoming on board Melissa for the start of our journey at WTT," said Matt Pound, WTT director.

"She brings wide-reaching and invaluable experience across the sports media sector and she will be an enormous asset to WTT, where we are building a very talented team of professionals to help drive our sport on to the next level in its exciting development."

WTT says it is embarking on an "innovative" media and marketing strategy.

The body highlighted its long-term partnership with global sports and events company IMG.

The partnership includes global media rights development and distribution, production oversight of WTT events and betting data and streaming rights for IMG Arena.

It will also encompass non-exclusive sponsorship representation and a general mandate to develop table tennis globally.

Events covered by the deal include the World Table Tennis Championships and all tiers of the revamped WTT event structure.

Additional partnerships with Philippe Le Floc'h, 160over90, Pumpjack Dataworks, Gemba and Superunion have also been agreed.

The creation of WTT has been criticised by some ITTF Member Associations, however.

The German Table Tennis Federation claimed the implementation of WTT had violated "essential principles of good governance and transparency".
