Ruka will host an International Ski Federation (FIS) Aerials World Cup event for the first time in 17 years as the Finnish venue opens the new season.

Tomorrow’s men’s and women’s competitions are expected be the first of 11 aerials and aerials team events due to take place this campaign.

It will be the only Aerials World Cup event this side of the new year.

Australia’s Laura Peel and Noé Roth of Switzerland begin as the defending World Cup champions in the women’s and men’s events, respectively.

The duo clinched the overall titles in the final event of last season.

Peel will expect to face competition from China’s Xu Mengtao and world champion Aliaksandra Ramanouskaya of Belarus if she is to retain her title.

The United States’ Megan Nick and Ashley Caldwell will expect to challenge for podium positions during the season.

Xu will not compete tomorrow, however, with the Chinese team unable to participate amid coronavirus safety measures introduced by the country’s Government.

Russia’s Pavel Krotov and world champion Maxim Burov will rival Roth in the men’s competition, with the duo having finished second and third respectively in last year’s standings.

Switzerland’s Pirmin Werner and Canada’s Lewis Irving could also have an impact, as well as Olympic champion Oleksandr Abramenko of Ukraine.

Abremenko opted to take last season off but is returning to the World Cup circuit in preparation for his Olympic title defence at Beijing 2022.

This season will serve as part of qualification for the Winter Olympics in Beijing, while it will also be held under safety measures due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Russia, Canada, the US and Belarus are due to host World Cup events in the early part of 2021, prior to the World Championships in Zhangjiakou in China.

China will hold a World Cup leg in March, with the season concluding at Almaty in Kazakhstan on March 13.
