Construction of the table tennis venue for the Chengdu 2021 Summer World University Games is nearly complete.

The Chengdu High Teach Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium will host the table tennis contest during the next edition of the Summer World University Games, scheduled for August 18 to 29.

Around 12,000 spectators will be able to watch competition unfold.

The venue is also set to be used for years to come for a number of different sports.

The 201,600 square metre complex is divided into two sections.

One section is due to play host to a multifunctional gymnasium, while the other side will hold a public fitness gymnasium, service centre and even open-air sports fields.

It will be the first gymnasium in Sichuan Province to meet National Basketball Association (NBA) standards, and will have the capacity to be turned into an ice rink to host ice hockey and speed skating events.

"Ensuring the healthy future for all Chengdu citizens, it seems the FISU World University Games is just the beginning of a positive legacy for the city of Chengdu and Sichuan Province."

A total of 49 competition training venues - including 13 which will be newly built and 36 which are renovated - and a main media centre have been set up for Chengdu 2021.

Table tennis is one of eighteen sports on the Chengdu 2021 programme.
