Germany extended their unbeaten streak in bobsleigh to five in this season's International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup, following two more victories on day two of the second event in Sigulda in Latvia.

The first action of the day saw Germany lock out the podium in the two-woman bobsleigh, with Laura Nolte winning her second World Cup race of her career.

Olympic champion Mariama Jamanka and world silver medallist Kim Kalicki tied for second after two runs.

Nolte, along with her pusher Leonie Fiebig, posted the fastest time on each of the runs, finishing with a combined time of 1min 42.37sec.

Nolte, the 2016 Youth Olympic champion, now has two victories and three more podium places in her seven World Cup starts.

Jamanka and her team-mate Vanessa Mark were just 0.02sec behind Nolte after the first run and looked in contention to win their second gold in Sigulda, having taken the IBSF World Cup lead last week in Latvia.

However, the pair fell off the pace on their second run, allowing Kalicki and Ann-Christin Strack to go level.

This meant that both teams shared the silver, 0.24 down on Nolte and Fiebig.

Austria's Katrin Beierl and Jennifer Onasanya, who finished second last week, could only muster fourth after a disappointing second run had the pair 0.47 behind the winners.

Switzerland's Melanie Hasler and Jasmin Naef were fifth, 0.94 behind Nolte.

Francesco Friedrich maintained his unbeaten run this season by winning his third two-man bobsleigh race with pusher Thorsten Margis, despite an early scare.

Neck-and-neck with home favourites Oskars Kibermanis and Matiss Miknis of Latvia, the Olympic champion finished the first run 0.02sec behind the Latvians, who sat top of the standings after the first run.

But the Germans were not to be outdone and reeled the home heroes back in to set a new track record of 49.31sec, winning by a margin of 0.10.

Although within touching distance after run one, Switzerland's Simon Friedli and Gregory Jones could not keep with the top two, finishing with a bronze medal, 0.42sec behind.

Friedli made his second World Cup podium after first making the top three in February 2020.

Germany's Christoph Hafer and Christian Hammers were fourth, half a second down from Friedrich while Johannes Lochner struggled on his first run with Eric Franke and despite a solid second run, could only finish fifth.

Lochner had previously come second in both two-man bobsleigh races so far this season, behind Friedrich.

Double Olympic bronze medallist from 2014 and 2018 Oskars Melbardis of Latvia, finished seventh in his first winter race of the 2020-2021 season alongside his push athlete Intars Dambis.

Tomorrow, another round of the two-man bobsleigh will take place as Friedrich looks for four wins in a row this season.
