The Professional Squash Association (PSA) has announced that the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions in New York City, has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A PSA World Tour Platinum event, the 2021 edition will not go ahead, ending over 20 years of the event being held annually.

It first took place in the Vanderbilt Hall at the New York City's Grand Central Terminal in 1995 and has been staged there yearly since 1999.

Due to the health and safety challenges caused by the virus, the organisers stated it was not viable to host the sporting event in Grand Central Terminal.

PSA, J.P. Morgan and tournament promoter Squash Engine will all stay on board for the 2022 edition, the first of three tournaments that J.P. Morgan will sponsor as part of its renewed partnership with the event.

"The Tournament of Champions is the oldest professional squash championship in the world and has only been interrupted by World War Two and the few years that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis led the movement to preserve and renovate Grand Central Terminal," said tournament promoter and Squash Engine President John Nimick.

"We are quite disappointed for the global squash community and all of the top professional players that 2021 will mark another forced interruption.

"Grand Central Terminal is one of the most unique venues in squash as it is a major transit hub and completely public and, as such, there were a range of factors we had to consider when making this decision, with the health and safety of everyone involved at the forefront of our thinking."

The Tournament of Champions was first held in 1930, with the women's event being introduced in 2001.

Squash returned, after a break due to the coronavirus pandemic, in September with the PSA Manchester Open.
