Brazil wrapped up a superb weekend in Guadalajara by winning the mixed team event on the final day of the Pan American Judo Championships.

The Brazilian team claimed the final gold on offer in the Mexican city with a 4-3 victory over Cuba courtesy of Jéssica Pereira's title-clinching win.

The triumph means Brazil finish the championship at the top of the medals table with 15 - including five golds, six silvers and four bronzes.

David Moura, Pereira, Eduardo Katsuhiro and Maria Portela scored Brazil's points in the semi-final as they swept aside hosts Mexico 4-0 in impressive fashion.

But Brazil found life tougher against Cuba despite going into the final with a one-point lead due to Idalys Ortiz's no-show.

In the first fight, Arnaes Garcia got the better of Pereira to get Cuba off the mark before Katsuhiro responded for Brazil with victory over Orlando Polanco.

Cuban Maylin Del Toro Carvajal then saw off Portela in a 70kg contest that lasted more than five minutes.

Iván Felipe Silva, a silver-medallist in the under-90kg at the 2018 World Championship, moved Cuba 3-2 in front when he defeated Eduardo Yudy.

The men's heavyweight clash saw Brazil’s Moura overcome Andy Granda to draw the match level at 3-3 and set up a tense finale.

The 57kg weight was then drawn to decide the title, meaning Pereira faced off against Garcia for the second time.

Pereira lost the earlier bout but pulled off a waza-ari to defeat Garcia and clinch gold for Brazil.

Cuba had to settle for silver while the bronze went to Peru.

Brazil also strengthened their position at the top of the medals standings, finishing ahead of Canada and Cuba who both picked up seven medals.

There were 700 ranking points awarded to gold medallists at the competition, boosting their hopes of Olympic qualification.

Champions were crowned in 14 weight classes.
