German car manufacturer BMW is developing a simulator for the country's national bobsleigh team.

BMW has created a simulator for the German Touring Car Masters, which is set to be expanded to include bobsleigh tracks.

A real bobsleigh chassis with original steering will be mounted on a movable platform, while the simulator will also use detailed 3D scans of the track and vehicle development software.

It gives German bobsledders the chance to visualise tracks to help with their training.

BMW said the simulator could be in operation in the coming months.

The first track to be featured will be the run at Königssee.

Olympic and world champion Francesco Friedrich and Johannes Lochner, world champion in the four-man event in 2017, are among the German athletes to have completed test runs in the simulator.

"It's crazy how close this comes to reality," said Friedrich, who won two and four-man gold at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

"If we were to implement something like this for bobsleigh racing, it would be possible to learn new tracks much faster and improve the steering in every detail."
