Head coach Graham Arnold has challenged Australia's under-23 players to stake their claim for a place at Tokyo 2020 over the next nine days.

The Football Federation Australia has announced its 26-man party for a training camp in Sydney which started yesterday.

Arnold’s domestic-based selection features 11 members of the squad that helped the Olyroos qualify for next year’s Olympic Games after securing third place at the Asian Football Confederation Under-23 Championship in Thailand in January.

While in camp, Australia are expected to play two friendly fixtures against A-League clubs, starting on Thursday (November 12) when they are due to meet Sydney FC at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium in Kogarah.

The Olyroos are then scheduled to face Macarthur FC at the same venue on November 17.

Sydney FC trio Tom Heward-Belle, Luke Ivanovic and Joel King, as well as Brandon Wilson of Perth Glory, are set to leave the camp later this week due to AFC Champions League commitments.

Arnold claimed his players arrived with a spring in their step and was now set to run the rule over his squad.

"After a year of little national team activity, the players arrived yesterday eager to be back in camp and to resume the journey to Tokyo," Arnold said.

"Australia’s history in the men’s football competition at the Olympic Games dates back to Melbourne 1956, and this generation of players helped to secure Australia’s men’s team a return to the Olympic Games for the first time since Beijing 2008.

"This group of players - and the many more we are monitoring in Australia and overseas – have the opportunity to be part of a special period in Olyroos history as we work towards Tokyo.

"The next nine days and the forthcoming A-League season represents a fresh start and a great opportunity for all players to push their case for Olyroos selection in Tokyo."

Australia's best performance in the Olympics was at Barcelona 1992 where they reached the semi-finals before losing 6-1 to Poland at the Nou Camp.

They then lost the bronze medal playoff 1-0 to Ghana.
