Nike announced it will lay off 700 workers at its global headquarters in Oregon rather than the 500 it suggested in July.

In July, the sports footwear and apparel giant revealed it would make cuts to some members of its corporate team and their executive assistants.

In addition, 192 employees who work at the company’s two childcare centres were set to be impacted as Nike decided to shut the facilities and shift its childcare strategy.

The announcement came a month after Nike revealed that it had swung heavily into loss in its March-to-May 2020 quarter, in results that it said were "significantly impacted by physical store closures" across the globe due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nike has now indicated it will implement 700 job cuts, but has not given information on which roles will be impacted by the 200 additional cuts.

The company did reveal it expected the layoffs to be completed by January 8.

Nike also announced a shake-up of senior management in July as new President and chief executive John Donahoe looked to spearhead a digital transformation of the organisation.

The reorganisation resulted in the appointment of vice-president, general managers for the men’s, women’s and kids’ market segments, all reporting to a "President, consumer creation", Michael Spillane.
