Dutch cyclist Yara Kastelijn is to defend her title at this weekend's European Cyclo-Cross Championships in 's-Hertogenbosch.

The 23-year-old triumphed in the women's race last year in Silvelle di Trebaseleghe in Italy.

She should be defending her title in front of a home crowd this weekend, but restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic mean no spectators will be allowed.

Kastelijn will be challenged by compatriot and reigning world champion Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado, along with Belgium's three-time world gold medallist Sanne Cant.

Toon Aerts of Belgium is a key contender in the men's contest, as is Lars van der Haar of The Netherlands.

Mickaël Crispin of France is considered one to watch, having moved up to the senior event after claiming the under-23 title last year.

The women's race is scheduled for tomorrow, followed by the men's contest on November 8.

European Cycling Union President Rocco Cattaneo revealed his excitement for the event.

"When cyclo-cross is talked about in Europe, it is always about the passion for one of the most fascinating disciplines in the world of cycling," Cattaneo said.

"This passion is particularly present in the Netherlands, especially in 's-Hertogenbosch."
