Julia_Chepalova_skiingNovember 7 - A threat to ban Russian skiers from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi has been lifted after the country improved its anti-doping programmme.

The International Ski Federation (FIS) had warned Russia in June that they faced the possibility of missing the Olympics in their own country following a series of high-profile doping scandals.

The FIS ruling Council said it would continue watching the reorganised Russian association to ensure its reforms continued.

"The Council acknowledged the positive steps taken to address the many problems in a truly meaningful way," FIS said in a statement.

"This approach of the Russian Ski Association must be a new beginning and it will monitor progress whilst supporting the ongoing work."

Following the warning, Russian officials fired several cross-country skiing coaches and support staff who worked with skiers caught using the banned blood-booster Erythropoietin (EPO).

Six nordic skiers from Russia have been suspended for two years for doping since 2009, including triple Olympic champion Julia Chepalova.

Athletes are being tested more often in training and after races, and anti-doping education programmes have been improved.

Russia's reputation for winter sports doping had prompted International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge to intervene with state President Dmitry Medvedev.
