Former Chinese national men's volleyball player, Wu Sheng, has been appointed as the new head coach of the team and has set his sights on the nation qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

This news was announced by the Volleyball Management Center of China's State General Administration of Sport.

China missed out on a men's volleyball spot after losing in straight sets to Iran in what was the last Asian qualifying spot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Having only taken part as the host nation at Beijing 2008, the Chinese men's volleyball team has never qualified from a tournament for the Games.

In contrast, the women have taken part in every Olympic Games since Los Angeles 1984, winning three gold medals, a silver and two bronze.

Lai Yawen, deputy director of the Management Center, claimed the men's national team should focus towards the Games as soon as possible, with less than four years to go.

"Wu is experienced in coaching and strict in managing," said Lai, as reported by Xinhua, China's official state-run news agency.

"He has a comprehensive knowledge of the development of volleyball at home and abroad.

"We believe that he will lead the team to make a roaring comeback."

Wu started his coaching career in 1993 and in 2014, he led the Zhejiang women's team to win the Chinese Volleyball League.

"Compared to other players of some strong Asian teams, Chinese players are physically good, but need improvement in basic techniques and skills," said Wu on his appointment.

"We will figure out a proper tactic to bring our strength into full play."

Upon the announcement, there was also a new 25-player training list that includes players from eight provincial club teams and the People's Liberation Army team.
