The Government of the Sverdlovsk Region in Russia is set to draft its regional budget for 2021, handing over 21.3 billion rubles (£209 million/$269 million/€231 million) for the Yekaterinburg 2023 Summer World University Games. 

According to Russian state news agency TASS, this was announced by the Department of Information Policy of the region.

"Expenses for the implementation of measures to hold the Universiade in 2023 in Yekaterinburg are planned in the amount of 21.3 billion rubles," read a message from the department.

TASS previously reported that the total amount of funds for the preparations of the Games was set to amount to 64.7 billion rubles (£634 million/$818 million/€702 million).

Earlier in October, TASS reported that the total cost of construction work for the Games will be more than 38 billion rubles (£370 million/$480 million/€412 million).

In August, it was reported by TASS that the Games' budget had increased by over 6 billion rubles (£58.9 million/$76 million/€65.2 million).

Yekaterinburg was awarded the 2023 Summer World University Games on July 2 2019 by the Executive Committee of the International University Sports Federation.

It will be the second time that Russia will host the Summer Games after Kazan in 2013, with Moscow hosting the Games in 1973 when part of the Soviet Union.

In 2019, Krasnoyarsk hosted the Winter World University Games.

Yekaterinburg 2023 is scheduled to take place from August 8 to 19 2023.
