Promising taekwondo player Reba Stewart will receive a five-figure cash injection after being named in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF) scholarship and mentoring programme.

The 19-year-old Australian will be among 10 young athletes to secure AUD5,000 (£2,700/$3,500/€3,000) after earning a "tier two" scholarship.

Stewart secured her place at next year’s Olympic Games after defeating New Zealand's Taylor Shaw in the heavyweight final at the Oceania Tokyo 2020 Olympic Qualification event in February.

"I am honoured to be a successful applicant for a SAHOF scholarship," said Stewart.

"Feeling an equal amount of excitement and appreciation to be recognised and supported through this program, I look forward to being able to continue to focus on my training knowing that some of the heavy lifting with expenses is being taken care of."

Since representing Australia for the first time at the 2015 Cadet World Championships in South Korea, Stewart has competed regularly for her country.

During 2018, Stewart represented Australia at seven different tournament, returning two gold medals and two silvers as a junior and one gold and one silver as a senior.

She held Oceania titles for both senior and junior divisions and finished the year as the highest-ranked Australian in her weight categories in the world and Olympic division.

Last year, Stewart competed at the 2019 World Championships in Manchester, where she reached the last 16, losing to eventual silver medallist Zheng Shuyin of China.

Zheng is further a reigning Olympic champion.

The SAHOF programme is supported by the Australian Government, with funding from Sport Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport, and has grown from offering five scholarships when it began in 2006 to issuing 32 this year.

Sport Australia chair John Wylie said: "From artistic swimming to modern pentathlon to judo, these scholarships will help more young athletes from across Australia reach the highest level of their sport.

"This programme provides financial support and acknowledges the incredible efforts of our junior athletes, who’ve shown compassion, athletic drive and determination to chase their sporting dreams."
