Chinese taxi app DiDi has signed a sponsorship deal with the Chengdu 2021 Summer World University Games.

The company has agreed to become the official ride sharing supporter of the student event next year.

DiDi will provide services including vehicles, car and bike sharing and freight transportation for those involved with the Games, including athletes, officials and volunteers.

Cheng Wei, the chairman and chief executive of DiDi, said that Chengdu 2021's principles of sustainability tied in with the company.

DiDi will continuously improve its innovation in technology in order to support smart and sustainable transportation, he said.

More than 10 billion passenger trips are said to have been recorded on DiDi in 2019.

The platform has more than 550 million users.

In March, the dates for Chengdu 2021 were pushed slightly back from the previous time-frame of between August 16 and 27.

The new dates are August 17 to 29.

This followed a request by the Organising Committee, with the change confirmed just hours after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics were moved back to 2021 because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are now due to run from July 23 to August 8 and some athletes will also hope to compete in Chengdu.
