Rugby_photo_winnerNovember 6 - This joyous image of young girls playing rugby at an Indian orphanage has scooped top prize in a prestigious international photographic competition.

Richard Lane's picture, entitled Bengal Khuki, was chosen by a panel of expert judges as the best out of 300 entries from 26 countries depicting the "Spirit of Rugby"

The scene, captured at the orphanage outside Kolkata, won the IRB/Emirates Airline Rugby Photograph of the Year 2010 competition.

"Rugby is a sport with a rich history and a strong tradition of fair play, respect, camaraderie, teamwork and friendship and this picture of girls discovering and experiencing these values for the first time perfectly depicts the true Spirit of Rugby," said IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset.

"It is also a stunning image full of colour, vibrancy and warmth."

The winner was selected by a panel of judges chaired by Paul Morgan, the editor Rugby World, and including Dave Rogers from Getty Images, Barry Newcombe from the Sports Journalists' Association, Joelle Watkins, the corporate communications manager of Emirates Airline, and Jim Drewett, a director at Vision Sport Publishing.

Lane's prize is an all-inclusive trip for two to the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens from December 3-4, the opening tournament of the 2010/11 HSBC Sevens World Series, courtesy of Emirates Airline.
