The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) has confirmed it will use rankings from the 2019 World Championships to allocate the remaining Tokyo 2020 quota places if Continental Championships scheduled to be held before the end of the year do not take place.

Two Tokyo 2020 quotas – one for the men's event and one for the women's – are on offer at each of the four Continental Championships which have not yet been staged this year.

Pan America is the only region to have held its Continental Championships in 2020, with those in Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement following the latest meeting of its Executive Board, the IFSC said spots available at the four events would be "reallocated through the ranking of the 2019 IFSC Climbing World Championships held in Hachioji".

The IFSC added the qualification system calendar for the sport, approved by the International Olympic Committee in April, would "not be modified".

Moscow is scheduled to host the delayed European Championships from November 20 to 29, while the Asian Championships in Xiamen and the African Championships in Cape Town are set to run from December 10 to 13.

The event in Asia looks set to be moved from China after the country's Government banned all international events except for Beijing 2022 Olympic tests for the rest of the year in response to the pandemic.

Sydney in Australia is due to stage the Oceania Championships on December 19 and 20.

The COVID-19 crisis has thrown qualification for Tokyo 2020 into disarray and International Federations have been forced into late revisions of their processes following the cancellation of numerous events.

The IOC told Federations earlier this year to stick to their original qualification system for the postponed Games, pushed back to 2021 as a result of the global health crisis.

The Tokyo 2020 qualification period ends on June 29, 2021 - exactly a week before the final entry deadline of July 5, 18 days before the Olympics are due to open on July 23.
