The top seeds at the Professional Squash Association World Tour Finals had mixed fortunes as the second round of games started in Cairo today.

The second day of the event, held at the Mall of Arabia in the Egyptian city, saw the remaining games from the first round of matches and the opening games of the second round of fixtures take place.

Competition is taking place across a round-robin format with the top eight men's and women's players in the world based on the CIB Road to Egypt rankings involved.

The top women's seed Nour El Sherbini beat compatriot Nouran Gohar, seeded three, 11-6 11-7.

El Sherbini has now won her opening two games and as well as topping Group A, she is also the first player to qualify for the knockout phase of the tournament.

The other match in that group saw New Zealand's Joelle King, the eighth seed, beat England's Sarah-Jane Perry, the sixth seed, 11-7, 11-13, 11-8.

King and Gohar have both won one and lost one of their opening two matches while Perry has lost both her opening two games.

In women's Group B, the remaining first round match was played today with Hania El Hammamy of Egypt, the fifth seed, beating fourth seed Camille Serme of France 9-11, 12-10, 11-7.

In men's Group A, top seed Ali Farag of Egypt lost 11-8, 4-11, 11-8 to compatriot Karim Abdel Gawad, the fourth seed and the defending men's champion in this tournament.

The other match in that group, which finished the day's play at 11.50pm local time, saw Germany's Simon Rosner, the eighth seed, beat Peru's Diego Elias 8-11, 11-9, 11-6.

Each player in that group has now played two matches, and all four have one win and one loss to their name.

In men's Group B, the remaining first round match was played today with Marwan ElShorbagy, the fifth seed from Egypt, beating New Zealand's Paul Coll, the third seed, 11-6, 11-5.

Action is scheduled to continue on the Glass Court tomorrow with two remaining second round matches in both the men's and women's competitions, and one third round match in each competition completing the schedule for day three.

The tournament was originally due to take place in June but was postponed to the coronavirus pandemic.

Strict protocols are in place at the event, with the Mall of Arabia operating at 50 per cent capacity in terms of spectators, while all players and staff have formed an event bubble.
