A decision on whether to hold the crucial International Boxing Association (AIBA) Congress to elect a new President as a virtual event is set to be decided tomorrow.

It will be among the key points debated at the online AIBA Executive Committee meeting tomorrow.

The event is currently scheduled to be held in Budapest on December 12 to 13 but it has been proposed to hold it remotely because of restrictions imposed in Hungary in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

European Boxing Confederation President Franco Falcinelli and American Boxing Confederation counterpart Osvaldo Bisbal have called for their respective members to support the proposal.

In letters to their members, seen by insidethegames, Falcinelli and Bisbal claimed holding the election to find a permanent replacement for Gafur Rakhimov as President is crucial to re-establishing its relationship with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

So far, the only candidates to have declared publicly are Azerbaijan’s Suleyman Mikayilov and the Dominican Republic’s Domingo Solano, but Russia’s Umar Kremlev is expected to throw his hat into the ring soon.

Another key issue to be discussed at the meeting are recommendations set to be put forward by the AIBA Reform Commission, chaired by China’s Wu Di.

"In the past few months, the AIBA Reform Commission has been working a lot to revise the draft of the new Constitution and also has been discussing other important issues of the organisation," he said.

"Only this month we have held two Reform Commission meetings and have worked for dozens of hours before and after the meeting to discuss and revise more than 30 articles in the Constitution.

"With the spirit of solidarity and a strong sense of responsibility, we are able to accomplish fruitful results in this difficult time to make sure that all the preparation work for the December Congress can be finished legally in time.

"We sincerely hope that our efforts can help AIBA meet IOC’s requirements and move in the right direction."
