The Brazilian Baseball and Softball Confederation (CBBS) has announced the cancellation of every tournament in the country in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In a short statement, CBBS explained its reasoning for not allowing the events to go ahead.

"Following the instructions of the CBBS Medical Department, the Technical Department of this Confederation has decided that there won't be any official competitions in 2020," it read.

"This measure is valid for every age category, both in baseball and softball."

Brazil is one of the most affected nations by COVID-19 in the world, with more than 4.7 million confirmed cases and the deaths of at least 141,000 people.

In the World Baseball Softball Confederation world rankings, Brazil are 14th for women's softball and 21st for men's baseball.

They are ranked 45th in men's softball.

A number of baseball and softball events have recently been cancelled, including the European Masters Cup by Softball Europe.

There was also the cancellation of the National Team Championships in the United States while the Mexican Baseball League season was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball looked to be back to some form of normality in June when the season resumed without spectators, with fans now starting to return.
