Finland's newest skiing event, Helsinki Ski Weeks, is now scheduled to take place in 2022 after it was postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

A decision was made by the Finnish Ski Association (FSA) to move the event from January and February 2021 to the spring of 2022, on yet to be confirmed dates.

Arrangements for Helsinki Ski Weeks started late in 2019 and the event attracted sponsors including bank giant Santander, security company Stadium and polyester manufacturer Finnfoam.

The City of Helsinki also acted as an event partner, while triple Olympic and three-time world cross-country skiing champion Johannes Høsflot Klæbo of Norway was due to be an athlete ambassador.

Finland's Krista Pärmäkoski, herself a four-time Olympic medallist in cross-country, was also down to appear as an ambassador.

Despite having to delay the event, executive director of the FSA Ismo Hämäläinen is positive about its future.

"We already have an exceptionally strong partner network compared to the current pandemic situation all over the world," said Hämäläinen.

"Together with our partner marketing company i2, we would like to thank the partners who have set out to build a new event with us, and now, despite the postponement, they will stay with us looking to the future."

Helsinki Ski Weeks' partners are reportedly committed to the move to 2022, which will see skiing at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.

A ski entertainment show entitled "Stadium Sprint" is set to launch the five-week event.
