Held at the Giza Pyramids Plateau with the backdrop of the famous Pyramids and the Sphinx, the event on September 5 was reported as a "positive outcome" by organisers.

"The draw was extremely successful from the point of view of the Medical Commission," said chairman of the Egypt 2021 Medical Commission, Hazem Khamis.

"We are pleased to report that the measures in place proved a success, as zero positive cases of COVID-19 resulted from the event.

"In this way, the memorable draw event remains a brilliant example of what we in Egypt hope to show the world in January – we are pleased that the draw will remain untainted by any negative medical news."

Khamis is also part of the IHF's COVID-19 Medical Task Force, which was formed in July.

It was largely created to manage measures implemented for the upcoming Men's World Championship, which is scheduled to take place from January 13 to 31.

It will also cover other events in next year's calendar such as the Olympic qualification tournaments.

Khamis stated that the measures put in place for the draw followed recommendations by the World Health Organization and the Egyptian Ministry of Health.

These will continue through to the Championship, where a bubble system will be put in place.

"Regarding the draw, the limited number of delegations who travelled to Egypt for the draw event were accommodated in a nearby hotel, which was directly connected to the draw location," added Khamis.

"All IHF and Organising Committee guests were accommodated in one building, where the staff were also fully within the bubble concept.

"All of this – the hotel and the access route to the draw location – were fully sterilised."

The draw had just 134 people present, with guests divided into groups to ensure social distancing.

These groups were made up of public figures, invited guests and media, with different personnel entering from different gates.

The 27th edition of the IHF Men's World Championship is due to be the first to be played with 32 teams.

It is scheduled to be contested at three venues in Cairo – the Cairo Stadium Indoor Hall, The New Administrative Capital Hall and The 6th of October Hall - and one in Alexandria, The Borg El Arab Hall. 

Defending champions Denmark are in Group D along with Argentina, Bahrain and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Meanwhile, Egypt have been placed in Group G with four-time world champions Sweden and Czech Republic, with an unnamed South American side yet to qualify.
