The governing body said the decision was taken by its Board due to the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

This included concerns over travel and fan attendance at the competitions.

FIVB said it is "committed to ensuring the health and well-being of the global volleyball family".

It is aiming to issue an invitation to bid for the 2021 editions by the end of next month.

The Volleyball Club World Championships are held each year with the FIVB opting to revive the event which had been held in the early 1990s.

The men's event returned in 2009 while the women's version has taken place each year since 2010.

Both events feature the continental champions of Asia, Europe and South America, along with a host nation representative.

Four wildcard teams are also selected to participate in the eight-team events.

No hosts for 2020 had been named with the events traditionally taking place in December.

Brazil hosted the men's event last year with Italian club Lube Civitanova emerging as the winners of the competition.

Imoco Volley, also from Italy, triumphed at the women's competition in China.

The Volleyball Club World Championships is the latest volleyball event to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

The Volleyball Nations League is among the flagship FIVB events to be called off this year, along with several Beach World Tour competitions.
