Top seeds Mohammed El Shorbagy and Camille Serme reached the quarter-finals of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Manchester Open.

Egypt's El Shorbagy came through in straight sets, defeating England’s James Willstop 11-7, 11-7, 12-10, but Serme did not have it all her own way in her second-round clash at the National Squash Centre.

The French player dropped a set in a 11-8, 6-11, 11-4, 12-10 triumph against Belgian 10th seed Nele Gilis.

Defending champion Joelle King of New Zealand also advanced after she saw off England’s Lucy Turmel 11-4, 11-5, 11-5.

"I was well aware of the dangers she possesses," King said.

"I just wanted to come out here and stamp my authority on the game.

"There were a couple of blips where I came off it a little bit but it didn’t linger for too long which is really positive."

In an all-Egyptian encounter, Hania El Hammamy defeated Nadine Shahin 11-4, 11-8, 11-7.

El Hammamy meets another compatriot in the last eight in Salma Hany who overcame Coline Aumard of France 11-3, 11-9, 11-6.

In the men’s draw, reigning world champion Tarek Momen followed fellow Egyptian El Shorbagy into the quarter-finals thanks to a 5-11, 11-5, 13-11, 11-9 win over Mohamed Abouelghar of Egypt.

Momen will now tackle New Zealand’s fifth seed Paul Coll, who beat Fares Dessouky of Egypt 11-7, 8-11, 11-5, 12-10.

The remaining second round matches are due to be held tomorrow.
