The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) announced Métral and Czech Republic’s David Schweiner had tested positive at the event.

The governing body said both players tested positive for COVID-19 several weeks prior to the event in August.

Métral and Schweiner reportedly recovered and produced negative test results close to their arrival in the Netherlands, before showing no symptoms upon arrival.

"Both players were therefore able to join the tournament bubble," the FIVB said.

"As per event hygiene protocol requirements, everyone within the bubble was required to undergo a PCR test for COVID-19 onsite as part of meticulous health and safety measures, and these two players tested positive.

“Immediately following the test results, the players were removed from the tournament and required to self-isolate.

"Those they were in close contact with, including teammates, were tracked and subsequently quarantined."

The tournament concluded yesterday with Switzerland’s Marco Krattiger and Florian Breer winning the men’s event, while Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Duda Lisboa secured the women’s title.

The format saw multiple teams on court, with the first two rounds played against the clock.

Only the King's side of the court were able to win points during the rounds.

Métral wrote on Instagram that he was convinced by the sport’s potential within innovative events, but expressed concerns the coronavirus pandemic could still have a negative impact.

Leaving Utrecht with mixed feelings... Those two days in Utrecht showed me that our sport has an enormous potential and that the media interest will continue to grow if the FIVB and @kingofthecourtbeach organize such events in the future. Unfortunately, it also showed me that Covid still has the upper hand this season. It will take some time until International sport is back to normal. I was tested positive a few weeks ago and ended up spending 10 days in quarantine. After a negative result two days ago, I've tested positive again. It doesn't mean that I'm still contagious but that there are still harmless traces of the virus in my body. I can't compete here in Utrecht but I can still go to restaurants or bars... How does that make any sense? I really hope that the @beachvolleyballworld finds a solution for the athletes who are tested positive, otherwise it is going to be difficult to continue doing our sport.
