The top seeds in the men's and women's singles reached their respective finals with hard-fought, three-set wins as the US Open wheelchair tennis competitions continued at Flushing Meadows in New York today.

In the men's singles, top seed Shingo Kunieda of Japan, who is aiming for a sixth US Open crown, went a set down to Belgium's Joachim Gerard before fighting back to triumph 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Kunieda will face defending champion Alfie Hewett in the final, after the British player knocked out second seed Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

In the women's singles, top seed Diede de Groot of The Netherlands also endured a tough passage to reach the final as she beat compatriot and doubles partner Marjolein Buis 7-6, 4-6, 6-1.

Both last-four matches went to the form book as second seed Yui Kamiji of Japan won comfortably against Colombian Angelica Bernal, dropping just three games as she triumphed 6-2, 6-1 in exactly one hour.

In the quad singles competition, being played in a round-robin format, today's matches included a meeting of the top two seeds Dylan Alcott of Australia and Andy Lapthorne of Britain.

Top seed Alcott won in straight sets 6-1, 7-6, while in the day's other match Sam Schroder of The Netherlands beat American David Wagner 7-5, 6-4.

In the doubles competitions, the two top men's pairings both enjoyed convincing victories as the competition started at the last-four stage.

Top seeds Hewett and Gordon Reid, the British pairing, won 6-3, 6-3 against Fernandez and Kunieda while second seeds Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer, the French pairing, won 6-2, 6-1 against Gerard and American Casey Ratzlaff.

It was a similar story in the women's doubles, with the top two seeds both enjoying straight-sets victories.

Top seeds Buis and De Groot won 6-0, 6-1 against Momoko Ohtani of Japan and Lucy Shuker of Britain, while second seeds Kamiji and Britain's Jordanne Whiley won 6-2, 6-1 against Bernal and Dana Mathewson of the United States.
