Dmitri Baskov has been appointed as President of the Belarus Ice Hockey Association (BIHA) at an Electoral Conference in Minsk.

Baskov had been serving as Acting President of the BIHA for the past two weeks following the resignation of Gennadi Savilov on August 26.

His appointment to the role on a permanent basis comes during a challenging time for Belarusian ice hockey.

Baskov would be expected to lead the BIHA through to next year's International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Men's World Championship, which the country is scheduled to co-host with Latvia.

But the Latvian Government this week formally called on the IIHF to strip Belarus of its co-hosting rights amid ongoing unrest and demonstrations in the nation following longstanding President Alexander Lukashenkov's disputed re-election last month.

Latvia has also threatened to withdraw as hosts unless the IIHF allowed it to jointly stage the tournament with a nation other than Belarus.

The IIHF is set to discuss the situation regarding the 2021 World Championship at its next Council meeting on September 17.

Baskov, who is due to complete Savilov's four-year term and is set to hold the position until 2022, will be tasked with guiding the BIHA through the tough situation for the sport in the country.

He said he "does not plan to carry out any revolutions" and promised the "general direction" of the body would stay the same as it was under former player Savilov.

"Today I enter the position of president of the ice hockey association and I’m glad that this was preceded by a long path allowing me to go through the entire sports vertically from the very beginning: from player to youth coach, under-18 and under-20 national teams, from head of a hockey school to the general director of a club from the second-strongest professional league of the world," Baskov said.

"I’m sure that the experience gained will allow us to work with the highest efficiency for the benefit of Belarusian hockey."
