Scheffers battled valiantly to save two match points but the world number two was unable to keep out the number 13 ranked Reid.

Reid had beaten the same opponent at the US Open USTA Wheelchair Tennis Championships in St Louis, and he adds this title to the PTR Championships he claimed at Hilton Head Island in September.

There was less to celebrate in the doubles though, where he and Marc McCarroll lost out to Holland's Tom Egberink and France's Michael Jeremiasz 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.

Britain'sJamie Burdekin won the quad singles, with a 6-0, 6-2 win over teammate John Parfitt, whilst Germany's Sabine Ellerbrock sprung a shock in the women's competition with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Dutch top seed Marjolein Buis.

In the women's doubles, Britain's Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley claimed a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win, which was all the more impressive for the fact that they trailed 5-1 in the final set against German pair Ellerbrock and Katharina Kruger.

"It's been another successful week for our British players on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour and for Gordon to defeat two players ranked above him to win the title is an incredible achievement," said the Tennis Foundation's head of player performance Geraint Richards.

"Jamie had a great tournament with two titles and the girls had to dig deep to win their doubles trophy.

"I'm confident the players can carry on this excellent run of form right into the Paralympic Games next year."
