Denmark’s Kasper Andersen and Italy’s Eleonora Gasparrini secured junior road race titles at the Road European Championships in Plouay, as Germany won the mixed team time trial to complete the week of racing.

The final day of the European Cycling Union (UEC) event saw bunch sprints decide the winners of the junior road races.

Gasparrini emerged as the winner of the 68.2-kilometre women’s race with the Italian crossing the line in a time of 1 hour 54min and 22sec.

She held off the challenge of the Belgian duo of Marith Vanhove and Katrijn De Clercq, who claimed silver and bronze medals on the same time as the winner.

Gasparrini’s victory continued a strong European Championships for Italy, with Giacomo Nizzolo having won the men’s elite race and Elisa Balsamo securing the under-23 title.

The 109.2km men’s race concluded in a hotly contested sprint finish, leaving a photo finish to determine the top three finishers.

Andersen was adjudged to have crossed the line marginally ahead of the Czech Republic’s Pavel Bittner.

Belgium’s Arnaud de Lie was forced to settle for bronze, with the main group ending in a time of 2:38:28.

The European Championships concluded with the mixed team time trial, which was held for the second successive year.

Germany emerged as the winners with Lisa Brennauer, Lisa Klein, Mieke Kröger, Miguel Heidemann, Michel Hessmann and Justin Wolf finishing in a time of 1:14:16.

Switzerland’s team of Elise Chabbey, Marlen Reusser, Kathrin Stirnemann, Stefan Bissegger, Robin Froidevaux and Claudio Imhof finished 24 seconds off the pace to end as the runner-up.

The podium was completed by Italy’s Vittoria Bussi, Elena Cecchini, Vittoria Guazzini, Edoardo Affini, Liam Bertazzo and Davide Plebani, who finished 2:33 behind the winners.

The mixed team time trial event has been mooted as a possible addition to the cycling programme at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The UEC had been forced to seek a replacement host for this year’s event in May, with original organisers Trentino now staging the Championships in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The race schedule was altered to allow riders to participate at the event prior to competing at the Tour de France, due to begin tomorrow.
