Johannes Høsflot Klæbo has received the Sprint globe for his World Cup success during a curtailed International Ski Federation (FIS) cross-country season.

The 23-year-old, who won three gold medals at Pyeongchang 2018, received the Sprint Globe trophy in recognition of his Sprint World Cup 2019-2020 success.

The Norwegian also received a medal for finishing second in the overall World Cup ranking, after the cross-country season was halted early due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Defending World Cup champion Klaebo enjoyed success on home snow when he triumphed at an FIS Cross-Country World Cup event in Drammen in March, shortly before the pandemic halted racing in mid-March.

When the season was curtailed later in the month, Klaebo enjoyed a healthy advantage over fellow Norwegian Erik Valnes in the sprint standings, earning him his medal, but was significantly in arrears of Russian Alexander Bolshunov in the overall competition, meaning he did not defend his overall crown.

In a video message posted on Instagram Klaebo said: "Finally - here's proof that I won the Sprint World Cup last season.

"Although the Sprint Globe is nice, I am missing the overall trophy. I think it ended up in Russia by mistake this time.

"Next year, I want it back! Well actually, I want both of them in the upcoming season."

The awards were sent to Klaebo in Norway from Canada and the United States and the FIS acknowledged that the handover of prizes had taken a long time due to the pandemic.

The FIS said: "Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the handover took a long time but it has not lost any of its value.

"It is a recognition for all the hard work, passion and commitment that is put into cross-country skiing.

"Congratulations to Johannes and we are already looking forward to many strong, tactical and fair fights out there on the FIS World Cup stage."
