The Japanese Wheelchair Basketball Federation (JWBF) has partnered with the Japanese Basketball Association (JBA) for a new project aimed at showcasing the sport across the country.

"Basketball Action 2020 - The Power to Surpass" wants to put a focus on not only playing, but analytical training for players and encouraging watching of the sport.

JBA's "Energising Japan With Basketball" philosophy will be blended into this project, looking to create a basketball culture through playing basketball in training and competitions, as well as watching the game more from the sidelines to pick up ideas.

The aim is to develop wheelchair basketball, 3x3 basketball and 5-man basketball.

As part of the first step in the project, an event will be held tomorrow (August 16) at the Yoyogi National Stadium 1st Gymnasium.

It will feature games and demonstrations from Japanese internationals in wheelchair basketball, 3x3 basketball and traditional basketball.

The hope is to give wheelchair basketball and other basketball formats a boost following the difficulties of the coronavirus pandemic.

"The whole of Japan is declining due to the spread of new coronavirus infectious diseases and the heavy rain disaster of July, however we believe that the current Japanese basketball has the power to exceed the limit and fulfill the dream," reads the Basketball Action 2020 website.

"Once again, we believe in the power of Japan Basketball to surpass and the power to come true, and we will continue to move forward step-by-step without stopping."

A National Student Free Throw Challenge will also be hosted as an online competition for elementary, middle and high school students.

The showcase will be streamed on online.

The men's wheelchair basketball demonstration time trial will be the first event, at 1pm local time, followed by the 3x3 basketball matches.

It will conclude with the 5-person men's and women's national team games.
