The 30-year-old destroyed compatriot Aniek Van Koot 6-2, 6-1 meaning that her remarkable winning streak dates back to January 2003.

The result also saw Vergeer picked up her 19th consecutive Grand Slam singles title although she was typically modest.

"I am happy with the result," said the 30-year-old world number one.

"Today I was confident even though I didn't feel as strong as the past two years.

"Aniek definitely came out tough.

"I enjoy the environment here.

"The fans are incomparable to any other Grand Slam.

"There were so many people watching this week and it was great.

"If there are a lot of people enjoying the game and cheering at the right time, it makes me feel good."

Vergeer is set to retire from the sport following the conclusion of the London 2012 Paralympics next year where she is highly likely to add to the five Paralympic gold medals she has.


Meanwhile, Peter Norfolk was forced to retire with injury during his quad singles final against American David Wagner (pictured right) while he was trailing 7-5, 3-1.

Norfolk made a brave attempt at trying to secure his third US Open Grand Slam title, taking a slender 2-1 lead at the start of the opening set before coming from 3-5 down to level the set at 5-5.

But after missing the chance to move 6-5 ahead, Norfolk was able to win just one more game as he struggled increasingly with the pain from a side strain.

"It's a very disappointing way to end any tournament, especially a Grand Slam final, but I was in a lot of pain and my mobility was severely hampered by the injury.

"I'll concentrate on getting fit again and look forward to being back on court challenging for more major titles."

The victory marked a great day for Wagner as he and fellow American Nick Taylor (pictured left) went on to win the quad doubles title against British pair Gordon Reid and David Phillipson and elsewhere Britain's Lucy Shuker and Louise Hunt defeated the American pairing of Shelby Baron and Montjane Baron 6-1, 6-1 to pick up the women's title.
