The Aussies took 35 gold, 25 silver and 19 bronze medals to finish comfortably ahead of the United States in second which claimed 27 golds, 26 silvers and 16 bronzes, and Brazil came in third with 24 golds, 13 silvers and 14 bronze medals.

Ellie Cole (pictured) was the Australian delegation's leading swimmer with six gold medals, while Kayla Clarke and Blake Cochrane took five apiece and Matt Cowdrey another four.

"The idea was to build on everything a year out from London and get people performing across a number of events and racing well, and those things have all happened," said Brenden Keogh, head coach of the Australian team.

"Ellie Cole is probably ranked number two or three in the world in three events now, and with 12 months to go that's a great position to be in, while Kayla Clarke has performed really well considering she was injured coming into the meet.

"We didn't expect to win the men's 34 point 4x100 metres freestyle relay and the boys really stepped up there, and then to see someone like Regan Wickens swim so well on his first tour has been great."

American multi-Paralympic gold medallist Jessica Long was also in sensational form as she broke four world records, taking seven golds in the process.

Mallory Weggemann head and shouldersHer team-mate Mallory Weggemann also took seven golds, breaking a world record in the 100m backstroke.

"I've wanted that [backstroke] record for a long time," said Weggemann (pictured).

"I had a bad turn and when I saw my split, I thought I've got to get a move on!

"I'm really excited I won another gold and was able to finally get that record."

Canadian Amber Thomas also racked up the medals with four golds, while team-mate Summer Mortimer claimed two.

There were 196 swimmers in Edmonton for the Championships, a crucial preparatory tournament ahead of next year's Paralympic Games.
