IWRF outlined the international competitions calendar until 2024, detailing how nations are set to qualify for the 2022 World Championship in Vejle in Denmark.

Due to the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games to August 24 to September 5 2021, it was decided to cancel the qualifying tournament. 

This was to reduce the challenge of giving teams enough time to recover after the Paralympics, and minimise the additional costs for teams to attend.

Previously, the winner of the World Championship would qualify for the Paralympics, and vice-versa. 

This has also been reviewed and is no longer in place.

Instead, four qualifying places are set to be available at a European Zone Championship, while three teams will qualify at both the Americas and Asia Oceania Zone Championships. 

The host is an automatic qualifier, with the final place going to the next highest on the world ranking list that has not already earned a place at the IWRF's flagship event. 

For the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, teams are due to qualify from Zonal Championships and a separate qualifying tournament. 

The IWRF will look to host an International Wheelchair Rugby Cup within the Rugby World Cup in Paris in 2023.

Alongside the update on competition structure, a timeline has also been laid out for the release and implementation of the IWRF classification rules, classification handbook, limb deficiency impairment measurement system and impairment criteria flow chart.

Draft versions of all documents are set to be released to IWRF membership for a consultation of no more than three months on October 1. 

The new IWRF classification rules and handbook will be implemented on January 1 2021, while the new limb deficiency impairment measurement system and impairment criteria flow chart is scheduled to be implemented on September 1 2021.
