Two-time Olympic gold medallist Haley Irwin has announced her retirement from international ice hockey.

The 31-year-old earned Olympic gold at Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 with the Canadian ice hockey team.

She also helped her team to silver at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games, losing in a dramatic final to the United States.

Irwin has moved into coaching and is currently assistant coach of the Ryerson University women's hockey team.

"Hockey has been my passion since I was a young girl and I feel very fortunate to have been able to wear the Maple Leaf and represent this amazing country we live in," she said.

"Hockey has taught me so many valuable lessons, given me so many amazing experiences and helped shape the person I am today.

"Playing for Team Canada was an honour and a dream come true and I will carry it with me for the rest of my life."

During her career, Irwin also clinched a gold medal at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in the US in 2012 and silver medals in 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2017.

She managed 38 goals and 42 assists in 108 career games for the Canadian national team.

"Haley was always driven to win and fiercely competitive, which is why she was so successful," said former teammate and Canadian women's ice hockey team general manager Gina Kingsbury.

"Her ability to read the game was a large part of that success and will no doubt be with her as she pursues a coaching career."
