The International Festival of Extreme Sports (FISE) has announced it will hold its World Series event, scheduled for Montpellier in France, completely online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Originally due to take place in May, the event was cancelled due to Government restrictions in France amid the ongoing crisis.

The 2020 circuit was also due to visit Hiroshima in Japan and Puyang in China before a final in Chengdu in China, scheduled for November 5 to 8.

However, the first three legs were all postponed, with the decision now to hold the French leg online.

The Montpellier event was expected to bring more than 600,000 spectators and near to 2,000 athletes this year.

A statement by Hurricane Events, the event organisers, said: "Huarricane Events is pleased to announce that in 2020, FISE World Series Montpellier will take place in a new, global and multidisciplinary form: a digital contest.

"The concept is simple and the contest will be open to male and female athletes, pros and amateurs.

"Each will participate in the event by submitting video entries which will be judged by both the fans and leading figures from the world of urban sports.

"The global prize purse will be the same as the 2019 edition."

Hervé Andre-Benoit, the chief executive of Hurricane Events and FISE, said: "This was a decision dictated by the crisis that we are all going through, prioritising our stakeholders' health and security, and the sporting and financial challenges this presents.

"I would like to thank the communities for their support and collaboration in making this complicated decision.

"This is a new challenge for the Hurricane group, but we will take on this challenge and continue to engage fans of urban sports all over the planet."

FISE also announced that the next physical edition of the World Series Montpellier will be scheduled for May 19 to 23 next year.

The FISE World Series includes sports such as BMX, skateboarding, parkour and wakeboard.
