International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) has announced the creation of a first virtual laser run competition during the coronavirus pandemic.

The governing body said it hopes the event will help to unite the global modern pentathlon community during the crisis, allowing participants of all ages to add the event to their home training regimes.

“The aim of #LaserHomeRun is to keep the global UIPM sports community united, motivated and active during this difficult time in their lives,” said Andrejus Zadneprovskis, UIPM Executive Board member for media and two-time Olympic medallist.

“At a time when all UIPM sports activity has been suspended, social media is playing an important role in enabling people to meet online, compare their home training activities with each other and have fun.

“We hope that #LaserHomeRun will be a nice extension of this – so I would encourage everybody to register today.”

The virtual laser run event will see entrants complete a series of exercises, before hitting five targets with a laser pistol.

Participants will aim to achieve the fastest possible time in each round of competition.

Qualification rounds for up to 20 competitors will be held on May 4 and 5.

Finals will follow on May 7, with the events featuring the six best athletes from the qualification rounds.

Coverage will be steamed live on UIPM TV.

The UIPM said there will be female and male categories across six age groups, ranging from under-11s to over 60s masters groups.

The youngest two age groups will have jumping jacks as an exercise, while jumping squats will be the task for the under-19 age group and the joint junior and seniors category.

Both the over 40 and over 60 masters age groups will have high knees as their activity.

All winners and medallists in each age group will receive gifts from the UIPM shop and recognition through UIPM social media and other communications.

All participants will receive a digital participation certificate.
