Vanuatu Cricket has attempted to capitalise on the lack of sport taking place around the world because of the coronavirus crisis by live streaming the finals of its domestic women's Twenty20 league.

Two women's matches and a men's exhibition contest were shown to the world on Vanuatu Cricket's Facebook page.

The video of the semi-final and final at the Korman Stadium in Port Vila attracted more than 400,000 views as people across the world tuned in to watch a rare example of a sporting event being held amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mele Bulls were crowned champions of the Women's Super League following victory over Power House Sharks, who had earlier thrashed Tafea Blackbird in the semi-finals.

The Pacific island, which has not reported any cases of COVID-19, is the first country to resume domestic cricket, shut down in large parts of the world because of the pandemic.

The men's 40-over club championship is due to begin next Saturday (May 2).

"We have decided that it is safe for us to resume our cricketing activities," Vanuatu Cricket chief executive Shane Deitz said.

"However, we understand that there is still a need for physical distancing and we will do our best to ensure that we abide by physical distancing recommendations and also maintain good hygiene."
