Park Hye-jin, a member of the Korean side that won women's basketball silver at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta Palembang, has been named most valuable player (MVP) in the South Korean women's professional basketball league for the 2019/20 season.

Park, who plays in the shooting guard position, won silver at the 18th edition of the Asian Games two years ago as part of the joint basketball team from North and South Korea.

She was announced as MVP after the South Korean domestic basketball campaign was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Park, 29, earned the award playing for Woori Bank Wibee.

It is the fifth time in her 12-year Women's Korean Basketball League (WKBL) career that Park has picked up the MVP award which she received after earning 99 out of the 108 votes cast by the media.

"I thought I was done winning the MVP award, and I want to thank my teammates for their support," Park said.

"I've always been my own toughest critic.

"I thought a lot about easing up on myself, but an award like this reminded me that hard work will always pay off."

Park offered to donate the 10 million South Korean Won (£6,640, $8,225, €7,570) MVP prize money to help the ongoing fight against the coronavirus.

"Everyone is in a really difficult spot," Park said.

"It's not much, but I'd like to donate it to a place where it can be put to good use.

"From now on, I'll put aside any individual goals and try to keep my team at the top.

"I'll spare no efforts in trying to become the best player I can be," added Park, who helped Korea qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, rearranged for 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, earlier this year.
