A 16-year-old Canadian luger hospitalised following a serious training accident in November is making "significant progress" in his recovery, according to Luge Canada.

Garrett Reid injured his head in the incident at the Whistler Sliding Centre, the same venue where Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili suffered a fatal crash on the eve of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

Reid, who missed out on competing at this year's Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne following the November 16 crash, has been recovering in hospital in Vancouver.

Luge Canada and the Whistler Sliding Centre later conducted a review of the incident.

"Garrett is a talented athlete, a great team-mate and most importantly a wonderful young man who we are thinking of every day," Luge Canada high-performance manager Sam Edney said.

"Luge is a sport where there are inherent risks and, unfortunately, accidents can happen in fractions of a second.

"Our team has been thinking about Garrett all season, and we are looking forward to seeing him back at the track to continue chasing his Olympic dreams.

"Thanks to the tremendous immediate care from the staff and paramedics at the track, Garrett was quickly transported to a Vancouver hospital where he has been receiving the best possible care.

"While he has been making steady improvement with his mother Leesa, father Ken and brother Parker by his side, Garrett has a long recovery ahead of him."
