Lina Farra has become the first athlete to receive a scholarship from the United States Biathlon Association (USBA) and Paul Smith's College.

The two organisations recently announced a partnership, making Paul Smith's College in New York the USBA Eastern Education and Training Center.

Having accepted her scholarship, 18-year-old Farra will become the first individual to combine education and elite level sport training at Paul Smith's College.

"A year ago, it was hard to imagine a college environment that would allow me to pursue biathlon and continue my academic career," she said.

"I am so excited to start learning and training at Paul Smith's incredible facilities with a phenomenal team to guide me.

"Thank you Paul Smith’s College and US Biathlon."

Farra, whose father is Albertville 1992 Winter Olympic cross-country skier John Farra, has previously competed at two International Biathlon Union Youth World Championships.

A new biathlon shooting range will be in place at Paul Smith's College for Farra to continue her development, while an additional 10 kilometres of Nordic trails have been added to the institution's network.

Farra will be able to study remotely while competing at domestic and international events.

"With strong family ties to the area, Paul Smith’s College will be the perfect place for Lina to continue her pursuit of biathlon, while simultaneously receiving a college education," said USBA director of athlete development and four-time Olympian Tim Burke.

"Lina has shown tremendous improvements in biathlon over the last two years and I look forward to seeing that progress continue at Paul Smith’s College."
