Pompey, elected to the role in December, discussed the rescheduling of the Games due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"The new dates give us a chance to regroup, refocus, and then fully prepare for the Games," the 42-year-old Guyanese sprinter said. 

"As your Athletes’ Commission, we are working very closely with the Panam Sports Executive Board, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to make sure you are updated and well-connected.

"The best way to get through this is together, with solidarity.

"So please, stay safe and follow all health and safety recommendations."

Pompey encouraged athletes to visit the Commission's website to stay updated. 

The Olympics have been rescheduled to July 23 to August 8 in 2021, while the Paralympics are set to be August 24 to September 5 of the same year. 

Tokyo 2020 and the IOC made the decision due to the escalation of the coronavirus pandemic, which has now infected more than 810,000 people and killed more than 41,000 worldwide. 

Panam Sports President Neven Ilic pledged his support for the postponed when it was announced.

"The Panam Sports family unanimously supports the IOC with all the measures taken with the International Federations to address the issues facing the NOCs and athletes in the current qualification opportunities," Ilic said. 

Pompey competed in the 400-metre race at Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

She failed to medal, but has a Commonwealth 400m title from Manchester 2002.
