The series will mark the 30th anniversary of the event, which was first held in 1990 in Canada’s capital city Ottawa.

The Canadian team emerged as the winners of the competition, where they overcame the United States 5-2 in the final.

Initially the World Championships was scheduled to be held every two years, but it became an annual tournament in non-Winter Olympic years since 1997.

This year sees the second interruption to the schedule since, with the World Championships at Halifax and Truro in Canada postponed until 2021.

The postponement was due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has heavily impacted the sporting calendar worldwide.

The 2003 tournament in Beijing had been cancelled due to the SARS outbreak in China.

The IIHF said it planned to mark the 30th anniversary of the tournament on the governing body’s website and social media channels.

The series begins with the landmark World Championships in 1997, where the tournament was officiated entirely by female referees and linesmen.

Previous tournaments had largely featured male officials, with the inaugural World Championships in 1990 seeing Deb Maybury serve as the only female referee.

The 1997 competition has been viewed as a key milestone, with female officials having overseen all Women’s World Championship and women’s Winter Olympic competition since.

A total of 19 editions of the World Championships have taken place in total.

Canada are record 10-time winners of the Championships, aided by winning the first eight editions of the competition.

The United States have closed the gap by earning gold on nine occasions, including wins at the past five straight World Championships.
