It was announced after the European University Sports Association (EUSA) and the Organising Committee of the event came to a decision to move the Games to next summer, but an exact date has yet to be established.

There have been more than 621,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, resulting in the deaths of over 28,000 people.

In a statement, EUSA said, "With the current situation unprecedented and unpredictable, we acknowledged that the health and wellbeing of all involved could not be guaranteed by July, nor would participants be able to adequately prepare considering the disruptions since the initial outbreak of the virus.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this unprecedented situation has caused, and appreciate your support as we continue our preparations for what is still set to be one of the biggest European university sports competitions ever."

The 2020 Games were set to be the fifth edition, following on from the competition in Coimbra in Portugal in 2018.

After the postponed Games set for next summer, the following summer will see the 2022 Games head to Lodz in Poland and in 2024, Debrecen-Miskolc in Hungary.
