The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has postponed its final Olympic baseball qualification event for a second time because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The final qualification event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was due to take place in Taichung and Douliu in Taiwan from June 17 to 21, but has been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Initially the qualifying event was due to take place from April 1 to 5 but was put back two months because of COVID-19.

The latest postponement was confirmed following a video conference between the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association, the Chinese Taipei Professional Baseball League and the WBSC Executive Board.

As a result, both the WBSC Americas qualifier and the subsequent final qualifier will be rescheduled for a date yet to be decided.

Six teams are set to compete in the WBSC Baseball final qualification event - hosts Taiwan, Australia, China, The Netherlands and the second and third placed finishers from the WBSC Americas baseball qualifier.

The winner of the subsequent final qualifier will earn a spot in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic baseball tournament.

Four nations have already qualified for the baseball competition at Tokyo 2020 - hosts Japan, Israel, Korea and Mexico.

The news of the postponement of the final Olympic baseball qualification event comes a day after the International Olympic Committee announced the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics because of the coronavirus pandemic.
