The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Para Games in the Philippines has been pushed back to October because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The ASEAN said the Games would go ahead from October 3 to 9 provided the coronavirus is under control and there is "no longer a threat to humans".

It means the Games will no longer offer qualification points for this year's Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The event has twice been postponed because of the outbreak of COVID-19, which has so far killed more than 7,500 people and infected in excess of 190,000 worldwide.

Athletes were originally due to compete between January 18 and 24 but these dates were pushed back due to "financial and logistical constraints".

New dates of March 20 to 28 were postponed until May or June by the ASEAN last month.

The ASEAN Para Sports Federation Board of Governors held an emergency meeting to discuss the Games this week and decided to tentatively schedule the event for later this year.

The Board is set to convene again at the end of July to "assess on the Covid-19 situation before confirming and proceeding with the proposed new dates for the Games".

A total of 1,533 athletes and 829 officials, from 11 nations, have signed up to compete at the 2020 ASEAN Para Games.

Athletes are due to compete across 19 sports in three main clusters in New Clark City, Subic and Manila.

There have been 187 cases and 12 deaths from the virus, which has wreaked havoc on the international sports calendar and led to numerous events either being postponed or cancelled, in the Philippines.

Parts of the country are in lockdown in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.
