Egypt's Hania El Hammamy upset four-time world champion and compatriot Nour El Sherbini to win her maiden Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour Platinum title at the Black Ball Squash Open in Cairo.

El Hammamy, the world number 10, battled to an 11-6, 9-11, 12-10, 8-11, 13-11 victory in a gruelling final at Black Ball Sporting Club.

The tournament is the last to be completed before a suspension on all PSA tournaments, imposed because of the coronavirus pandemic, comes into effect.

The postponement of PSA competitions will be in place until the end of April.

El Hammamy ensured she enjoyed a fitting end to the campaign before the month-long break with her first win over El Sherbini.

The world junior champion, contesting her first World Tour Platinum event final, was twice pegged back after going in front before claiming victory in an hour and 11 minutes.

"I’m out of words,” El Hammamy said.

"I’m living a fairytale.

"This morning, I was just hoping to play a good match, not like in the worlds, after beating Camille [Serme] where I just didn’t show up.

"I just wanted to enjoy my first ever Platinum final, and prove to myself I’m not too far away from the top girls.

"I’ve put in a lot of effort to win this title.

"I’m really proud of what I’ve done and hopefully I can keep going and keep making the same effort."
