World number 67 Hana Ramadan recorded a surprise win against Mariam Metwally on the first day of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Black Ball Squash Open in Cairo.

Ramadan was one of five Egyptians who booked their place in the second round of PSA World Tour Platinum tournament at Black Ball Sporting Club. 

She was initially a reserve player for the event, but defeated Metwally, 33 places above her in the rankings, 11-8, 6-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-5.

"I came into this tournament as a reserve player," Ramadan said. 

"So, I had the mentality that I have nothing to lose. 

"I’m excited to be in the tournament and really looking forward to the second round."

Ramadan's next opponent is set to be another compatiriot, 15th seed Nadine Shahin.

Fellow Egyptian Zeina Mickawy also faced her own five-game battle, forced to come from two-games down to secure a 8-11, 4-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-2 victory against Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold. 

She is due to face Amanda Sobhy of the United States next. 

Alexandra Fuller of South Africa confirmed a second round clash against defending champion and world number one, Raneem El Welily.

Fuller already has experience of getting past an Egyptian, having comfortably beaten Menna Nasser 11-8, 11-7, 11-8.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow, with the top seeds joining the draw.
